At the end of the winter semester of the academic year 2024/2025, we organized a full-day workshop focused on cyber security in the energy sector in cooperation with the Secondary Technical School and the Secondary Vocational School Dvůr Králové nad Labem (SPOŠ). The event was attended by 36 students and 12 teachers from a total of 12 secondary schools, including participants from Slovakia.
The morning programme included a practical exercise on the BUTCA (Brno University of Technology Cyber Arena) platform led by Tomáš Lieskovan, which most interested the students with its focus on ethical hacking. The afternoon part was filled with a lecture by Willi Lazarov on the current state of cybersecurity in the Czech Republic and the world. In parallel, a workshop for teachers on the same topic was held.
The importance of the event was underlined by the presence of representatives of Hradec Králové Region - Member of Parliament and Deputy for Education Jana Berkovcová and 1st Deputy Governor Jan Jarolím, as well as representatives of the University of Hradec Králové.
"I am extremely pleased that we could organize a cybernetic exercise for high school students at our school in cooperation with Brno University of Technology. The demonstration of the BUTCA simulator made a great impression on us and the participating students appreciated the opportunity to work on the simulator. I consider this simulator to be an absolutely groundbreaking solution and a unique and beneficial educational environment and we look forward to further cooperation with our colleagues from BUTC Brno. It is a great honour for us to be able to cooperate with such an important educational institution," evaluates Petr Vojtěch, Director of SPOŠ Dvůr Králové.
The workshop kick-started deeper cooperation in the region. We discussed the direct integration of the BUTCA platform at the secondary school and its distribution to other secondary schools in the region. Together we will also participate in the international cybersecurity exercise CZECH CYBERTRON in April 2025. Given the technical focus of SPOŠ, we will also continue to inform their students about the opportunities to study at our faculty.
The BUTCA platform has already been successfully deployed at University of Defence, University of Hradec Králové, Tampere University, SPŠE Plzeň (Higher Vocational School and Secondary School of Electrical Engineering Plzeň) and SPŠT (Secondary Technical School Třebíč). In the summer semester, implementation is being prepared for Vítkovice Secondary Technical School, SPŠ Purkyňova and EDUCAnet in Brno. At the same time, further training courses for industry partners are being prepared.
