Data Generator by DLMS Security Suite is a software application designed for:
- cybersecurity testing of smart meters,
- emulation of smart meters with DLMS communication and with full security (Security Suite 2) for testing of higher-level systems (headquarters, Head-End-System, communication infrastructure),
- assisted measurements at a given point of consumption to analyze the communication parameters of 5G-IoT technologies (NB-IoT and LTE Cat-M1) by generating real DLMS traffic (measurement of data volumes, throughput, delay, throughput, security, etc.),
- training and education in the field of cybersecurity in the energy sector thanks to the integration in the BUTCA cyber arena.
Benefits
The uniqueness of the result is due to its versatility, complexity, implementation of cyber security (Security Suite 2) and DLMS protocol for repeatable long-term testing of cyber security of smart meters not only in the Czech Republic but also abroad, as evidenced by commercial tests at the BUT. Another uniqueness is the scalability of the solution, where the generator can be used to emulate a smart meter with full cybersecurity (Security Suite 2), as evidenced by deployments for EG.D (emulation of 500,000 meters) and for ČEZ Distribuce (emulation of 800,000 meters). The third uniqueness is the deployment of the generator in the context of training and education in the field of cyber-security in the energy sector, as evidenced by the implementation of the generator in a security game called "Smart Meter Infrastructure" on the BUTCA platform, e.g. https://www.fekt.vut.cz/o_fakulte/aktualita/278081

In terms of social utility or "need", the following benefits can be mentioned:
- Validation and testing before mass deployment of millions of smart meters – eliminating errors (fewer technician call-outs) and increasing solution reliability – preventing outages and resilience to attacks (consumer benefit).
- In terms of societal relevance, the result brings benefits in education, where the software has been integrated into teaching.
- The software has been used in diploma and bachelor theses at Brno University of Technology.
The social usefulness is demonstrated by the marketing and social events where the result was presented. The following events can be mentioned:
- Ampere 2024 (generator implemented on Smartbox, which won the Golden Ampere 2024 award),
- CSRES 2023 (training and safety games for representatives of distribution system operators),
- CIRED 2023 conference (presentation of the result within the cybersecurity tester of industrial networks),
- ARTISEC workshop from 2022 to 2024 (demonstration for the state administration - Hradec Kralove Region).
Use and commercial deployment:
- EG.D and ČEZ Distribuce for stress testing of the central station and testing of new functionalities of the data centre (Head-End-System).
- BUT for commercial testing of smart meters or for selling emulator licenses.
- BUT for cybersecurity training and education in the energy industry.
