Development of an integrated concept for the deployment of innovative technologies and services allowing independent living of frail elderly (niCE-life)

The niCE-life project, part of the Interreg Central Europe program, aimed to improve social innovation in healthcare and elderly care. It focused on supporting independent living for seniors with cognitive impairments and chronic diseases such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s. The project developed smart monitoring solutions, enhanced healthcare models, and tested pilot programs across six Central European countries. By integrating advanced technologies and improving social inclusion, niCE-life contributed to a better quality of life for the elderly. The project ran from 2019 to 2022, promoting sustainable care solutions for aging populations.
The niCE-life project, funded under the Interreg Central Europe program, focused on enhancing social innovation in healthcare and social care. Its primary goal was to support independent and high-quality living for seniors, particularly those suffering from cognitive disorders, such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease, as well as chronic illnesses. The project was implemented in six Central European countries, specifically Austria, the Czech Republic, Poland, Slovakia, Slovenia, and Italy, and brought together ten partner organizations that worked on developing new technologies and care models for seniors.
Key activities of the project included the development of intelligent monitoring systems that help detect health changes early and enable better responses from care providers. Additionally, pilot testing of innovative healthcare and social services was conducted in real-world environments, involving seniors and healthcare professionals. The project also focused on the integration of modern ICT technologies, such as sensors, data analysis, and artificial intelligence, to improve care quality and enhance senior safety. Another important aspect was the creation of local action plans to ensure the long-term sustainability and expansion of new care models.
The project ran from July 2019 to June 2022, and its outcomes contributed to increased healthcare efficiency, improved collaboration among service providers, and the advancement of social innovation. Through niCE-life, technological innovations were successfully aligned with the needs of an aging population, leading to better quality of life for seniors and strengthening their independence and safety.
