Development of a system for autonomous analysis of fault records in distribution systems

The aim of this project was development of a system for automatic analysis and diagnosis of centralized fault records obtained from feeder protection of MV and HV distribution networks. The system utilizes automatic and manual import of the fault records, from which it will extract the characteristic parameters for their subsequent analysis and storage in the database repository. The solution includes a set of SW modules providing individual analytical and diagnostic functions: a module for recording the parameters of short-circuit and fault events, a module for recording voltage events and a module for quantifying the risks of electric shock. The system is equipped with a graphical interface which allows to view, interpret and use both current and historical data from the developed functions and tools.
The aim of the project was to develop a system for automatic analysis of centralized fault records of MV and HV feeder protections. The developed Fault Record Analyzer (FRA) system uses the concept of automatic download of fault records after identification of a fault in order to extract valuable operational information from available fault records. By detailed analysis of this characteristic information, it is possible to monitor the state of the distribution system and particular fault events, so that they can be used in the development of the distribution system, evaluation of the sensitivity to voltage events of new sources before their parallel connection to the network, quantifying the risk of injury due to arising touch or step voltages, evaluating the accuracy of fault event localization, etc. The solution includes a set of SW modules providing individual statistical, analytical and diagnostic functionalities: a module for estimation of parameters of short-circuit currents and fault events, a module for estimation of voltage events and a module for quantifying the risk of electric shock. The system is equipped with a graphical interface that allows detailed display and analysis of fault events, including their geographical context. The FRA system also includes a fault logging function, which is available even before the actual physical fault localization by the distribution system operator's employees. The system was applied during the pilot operation in real distribution network operated by EG.D, which began in 7/2024. This pilot operation includes more than 30 feeder protections at MV level and 2 at HV level. The expected completion of the pilot operation and the start of commercialization is planned for 7/2025. A detailed description of the system is provided on the WWW (https://www.rtu.cz/reseni/fra/) of the Vdip2 system supplier.
